Question: What do record companies look for in a guitar player to offer him either a recording contract or a job as a session musician?

Tom Hess's Answer: There are MANY factors being considered by a music company when they are approached by a potential business partner (that’s you). Most musicians think that being able to play their instrument at a high level is a major part of ‘getting signed’ or working in the music business. However, while it is important to continually improve on your instrument, this is only a small piece of the puzzle.

The bottom line is that a music company will need to make a big financial investment into the musicians it works with. Record companies look for the ‘right person’ who can demonstrate a very high potential to help the company make A LOT more money and very low risk of costing the company money to correct a musician’s mistakes or bad habits.

I have created a special music career resource about what record companies look for in order to help you determine exactly what you need to work on to get signed/hired as a professional musician. Find out what you need to do to get the attention of record companies and start working in the music business by filling out the assessment on this page called What Does The Music Industry Look For In You?
