Lesson 6

Investing In Your Music Career

“Unless you change how you are, you will always have what you've got.”
~Jim Rohn

It has been proven throughout time that dreams are only dreams until you put your commitment behind them and take action. The most successful people in the world built their success by investing in their dreams and in themselves in order to be, do and have what they desire in life. They dreamed their dream, and did whatever it took to achieve those dreams. Like these people, you have dreamed your dream; and from these people, you can learn what it takes to successfully achieve your dreams.

Here are some key components to develop your music career success:

  • Be persistent - Persistence is essential to success. Do not give in to failure, you may be on the brink of a major victory.
  • Invest in yourself - Cost of success is always paid in advance… so invest in yourself first.
  • Put your knowledge to use - Knowlegde is only potential power until it is organized into definite plans of action and directed towards a goal. Knowledge without action is often useless.
  • Surround yourself with people who are encouraging, knowledgeable, and who hold you accountable to your commitments. Relying solely on your own knowledge, motivation, and skills will only ensure a lonely, long and difficult journey.
  • Never stop learning from books, courses, teachers, and those who have gone before you. This will save you years of mistakes and discouragement.
  • Build strong, beneficial relationships in the industry by continually asking the question, “What can we do for them?”
  • Don’t let the opinion of others or your own reasoning get in your way. Trust your instincts, take educated risks, and adjust your plans as you move forward.
  • Organize your resources and prioritize your actions.
  • Be sure about what you do - Guesses, assumptions, and uncertainty can sabotage your efforts. If you are not sure what to do, learn from experts who do know.

Those who are highly successful share common traits that you can learn and develop in your own career. The list below reflects some of the top traits shared by those who have achieved high levels of success. If any of these things are not currently a consistent part of your life change that… today.

  • Be willing to do whatever it takes to reach your goals.
  • Take control of your circumstances.
  • Be quick to make decisions (don’t procrastinate in choosing what to do), and cautious in changing course.
  • Do more than is expected of you, and more than you require of others.
  • Take action on your dreams every day… consistency is the key.
  • Assume full responsibility for your mistakes, pull yourself back up and keep moving forward… always.

Success By Luck

“I'm a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it.”
~Thomas Jefferson

Some musicians see the success of others and think, “he was lucky,” as if the universe just happened to align in favor of that person. But what they don’t see is the amount of hard work and determination that other musicians put into making sure they were successful.

Luck is earned, not given
Nothing happens out of pure luck. Actually, we will go as far to say that luck and chance do not truly exist at all. We bring about favorable opportunities in our lives based on the decisions we make along the way. What decisions have you made to rise above unfavorable circumstances? What types of people do you surround yourself with? What reputation are you building for yourself? How are you preparing yourself and creating those moments that most people consider “luck”?

Lead yourself out of a “luck mentality” by taking control and positioning yourself for opportunity.

Creating your own opportunities
Instead of depending upon others or chance, let’s add to your plan for success:

  1. Learn to recognize those who are talented, intelligent, and ambitious. Surround yourself with these positive people. Begin building relationships with specific people in the music industry who will help you achieve your goals. It really matters who you know and who knows you, but this will not happen without you making it so. Put yourself in an empowering environment with like-minded musicians. These are not competitors, they are your future support group, and possibly your future partners in the music industry.

  2. Know who your fans are and how to reach them. Many bands have no focus in their promotions and try to reach as many people as they can. But let me ask you this… If you have a limited amount of time, money and other resources, which would bring out more people to your shows or create more record sales: promoting to 1000 people, or promoting to 1000 specific types of people you know would like your music?

You are what you choose to become
No one has the passion for your music and goals that you do. Let this one truth give you the drive to create the things that you really want in life. It takes work, a lot of focused work and determination, but that hard work will give you the results you are looking for. Do you need more fans to get a better time slot at a venue? What other things would you like to see happen? What could you do to make these things happen? Remember, opportunity follows those who refuse to wait.

“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”
~Seneca

Your music career lies in your own hands. History has shown that many artists with passion and determination, as well as a focused plan, stood the test of time and found the way to their ultimate goals. Your success will not happen by luck, but by how determined you are to make it happen and the actions you consistently take.

We have one final question for you today. Are you and/or your band willing to invest in your own future and begin taking focused, determined action? Stop guessing, experimenting and wishing and start ‘doing’ what you should be doing right now to succeed. Get real rock band success coaching. We will take you through the same proven process that professional bands use to make in in the music industry.
