Taking Lessons from a Teacher

by Benji Gold

Many of you reading this article are not involved in guitar lessons (for example, from guitar teachers who teach at a local music store). Some even think that the free information obtained by searching the Internet is enough to make them masters of the guitar. But there is the problem right there: they haven’t made a wise decision because there was nobody or no educational influence to help make the right decision, which is to participate in guitar lessons.

Taking guitar lessons versus not having any kind of teacher has many more positive aspects than learning guitar independently. Sure, the downside of investing in guitar lessons is you have to spend money. But, you have to spend money to make money. In other words, having an experience guitar teacher teaching you his methods on how to become successful will benefit you in many ways, even profitable.

Here’s an example that you can see right now. I have the opportunity to work directly with Tom Hess. Tom won’t take just anybody to work with him. He has been a great mentor for me as I’m entering the music business as a career. In order for me to work with Tom, I had to be recommended to him by my awesome guitar teacher, Mike Walsh. Without Mike, I wouldn’t have the opportunity to be working with Tom or even had been introduced to him.

In the actual playing side of the spectrum, having a teacher to guide you is way more organized and is usually less stressful than learning independently. Plus, if you have any questions or something is confusing you, it can be answered by the teacher instantly. They can always work with you to show you what you’re doing wrong with your playing, and what you can do to improve yourself. They share their knowledge, exercises, and open up opportunities and new doors for your self. How? If you find the right teacher who has credentials, this makes it easier for you to gain credentials through them. And as everyone knows, if you build your credentials high enough to the point where you are pretty much famous and well respected, you have been successful at guitar.

The difference between having a guitar teacher versus not having one is obvious: learning with a guitar teacher is successful. Learning independently is a waste of your time. You know you’re a better player when your not getting stuck on certain questions that are answered by your personal teacher. You know you’re a better player when you have been introduced to new contacts and start to build your way slowly into the network. You know you’re a better player when you start to gain credentials. Finally, you know you’re a better player when you realize that a guitar teacher is the most vital aspect in becoming a great guitarist.
