How To Turn Your Rock Band Into a Success - Free 12 Day Mini Course
Lesson 3

Hello again! By now you should have a very clear idea of what your goals are as a band and as individuals in that band. You should also have a written description of those goals, and exactly what it looks like to have achieved them. Congratulations! You’ve done more than most bands ever think to do. And according to many of the leading experts on success, you just made one giant step towards truly realizing your dreams!

There are still two major things we have yet to talk about:
1. What has held you back from reaching your goal in the past.
2. How you plan to reach your goal.

Let’s start with the first one. What we are going to do now may seem similar to what we have already done in lesson 1, but it is not. In lesson 1 we looked at internal problems or conflicts within the band and how each of you deals with them. We wanted you to identify the "symptoms" of your problems and challenges. In this lesson we are going to probe deeper into why your goals are not being achieved so that you can get a very clear picture of what the real 'causes' of your problems are (not just the symptoms) and how to finally solve them.

When each of you really thinks about what it looks like to achieve your goal, what internal obstacles start to surface? Don’t try to find solutions at this time, just put your top objections on the table and look at them.

If you find that question difficult, there is another way to think about it. What stopped you in the past from achieving your goals? Was it procrastination? A certain person holding you back? Your influences? Lack of money? Lack of knowledge? Most importantly, what was that little voice in your head saying? Each of the things we listed are rational, but often it is a little voice in your head that brings it up, reminds you of it, and then won’t let you forget! What did that antagonistic little voice tell you before? What is it saying now? Talk about it together for a while, then name what you believe are the top 3 obstacles or challenges that each of you share.

2.
3.

Where else are these problems active? Name other parts of your lives where that voice is saying the same things to you. For example, if procrastination is a problem in your band or yourself, where else in life does procrastination cause problems for each of you?

Now let’s try to look at the opposite of what that little voice is saying. Saying these things out loud will seem strange at first, but they can be equally fun. Take one of the things above and say the opposite out loud. For example, if you wrote that procrastination is holding you back from reaching your goals you can state the opposite by saying, "I do not procrastinate on taking actions which lead me to my goals. I move forward now, not later.”

How does it feel? Laugh together about them. But don’t forget how it feels to say the opposite. Does it feel silly? Perhaps that’s the voice talking again. Perhaps that’s what you should be feeling when telling yourself that you can’t do something because of x, y, or z. Does it feel good? Is that how you want to feel? In psychology this process is called cognitive dissonance. That is where you know and contemplate on who you want to be and how you want to feel, while living and being who you are right now. The phrase “fake it ‘til you make it” comes to mind. Only this time you’re not faking it, you’re rehearsing being who and where you want to be.

How can you adapt or adjust your mindset and actions in light of what you wrote above? How might your goals look now? Any different? Talk about it for a while. See what solutions all of you can come up with. Remember these things when you’re putting together a band agreement. This type of brain storming is not only beneficial to learning to work as a team, but also in preparing for possible problems that can arise in the future.

Now, what behaviors and solutions are you going to start implementing right now? Each of you will have different answers for your own life. But what answers do you have for the band as a whole?

You are each now quite a few steps closer to realizing your dreams. You each just took giant leaps ahead of other bands in being who you need to be in order to achieve and enjoy your goals. Revisit this lesson and the others before it as often as you can. Let them serve as a reminder of who you want to become, what has held you back, and what things you can do that will help you be successful.

In our next lesson, we will take a quick look at the resources you have available to you right now, and how you can use them to achieve your goals. Then, in Lesson 5, we will map out a plan using key milestones along the way to your goals.
