Question: How long does it take to learn guitar? I don't want to rush myself, but the progress seems slow. I have been playing guitar for 6 months and I don't even know how to shred. My dream is to become a great guitarist like Jimi Hendrix, it's my heart and soul, but I doubt my ability to reach a high level of guitar playing. Is this normal?

Tom Hess's Answer: If everyone knew how to learn guitar fast, for sure there would be a lot more great guitarists in the world than there are, and a lot fewer guitar teachers. While I cannot predict the exact number of months or years it will take you, I can tell you that it will take more than 6 months to learn to play well.

The good news is that it is very possible for anyone to learn how to become a better guitar player. (I know this from successfully teaching hundreds of guitar players from all over the world to do so), but this process requires time, perseverance, patience and expert guidance from a great teacher. It is this last point that will help you greatly with minimizing the time it takes to become the guitar player you want to be.

The reason why it takes most guitar players so long to learn guitar is because they take the longest possible route to their goals by teaching themselves or studying with only a mediocre guitar teacher instead of a 'great' one. Because guitar teachers aren't licensed and there are so many to choose from, it is hard to know how to find a "great" guitar teacher for you. I put together a special guide that will help you find a guitar teacher who will get you the best results.

Study this resource and seek out the best guitar teacher you can find. This will help to greatly reduce the amount of time it will take you to become an awesome guitarist.
