Question: How do I attract students away from taking lessons in the music schools, which here almost all of them are mediocre and have poor quality teachers? I've had people who said they are happy with the kind of instruction they get in other places, but I know they would learn a lot more in the same time with me. Some of these music schools, what I get them to learn in 6 months at the music schools they learn in 6 years!

Tom Hess's Answer: I’m not surprised at all that these other guitar teachers are not very good. The majority of guitar teachers do little or nothing to improve their guitar teaching skills. Either they are lazy, or arrogant. The problem is made worse by the fact that the other teachers around them are probably the same way, so by comparison they think are average or ok, but the truth is since others around them also are not very good the standard is set very low. It’s rare that guitar teachers like you are proactive in learning more about guitar teaching, so I commend you for being one of the few who actually take guitar teaching seriously.

The good news is that the VAST majority of guitar teachers and guitar teaching schools have NO CLUE how to effectively market and run highly successful guitar teaching businesses. Although there are a lot of guitar teachers around the competition is actually very weak since most don’t know what they are doing to run highly successful businesses.
