Tom Hess's Answer: There exist MANY different songwriting methods for writing melodies - including many approaches that do not involve waiting for an idea to come to mind or improvising ideas in the moment.

Read through the songwriting methods article series I have created and you will find more than enough approaches to get started. Choose 1-3 ideas, then apply them to create either a single song melody or many variations of a melodic idea. Note: You must actively practice songwriting to get better at it (just like with guitar). To make fast progress in this area, incorporate songwriting into your current guitar practice schedule and work with a guitar teacher who will help you develop your creative potential as a songwriter.
