Now that you know how to play guitar with feeling, learn more ways to play creatively and expressively:

Playing Guitar With Feeling - Tip #1: Master Fretboard Visualization

Before you can play guitar with feeling (without creative limitations) you need to develop great visualization of the fretboard.

This is not the same as just memorizing the note names of every fret however.

To really learn how to play great solos up and down the neck of the guitar you need understand how scale patterns, arpeggios or other licks connect together across the neck.

Great guitarists typically has the ability, which gives them the power to effortlessly play great guitar solos with feeling that flow from note to note.

In contrast, guitarists who don’t know their way around the fretboard end up playing memorized scale fragments or licks that don't sound very musically expressive.

Make fretboard memorization a priority to start playing guitar solos and licks in any position of the fretboard at any time.

Playing Guitar With Feeling - Tip #2: Focus On Expression Versus Playing Memorized Patterns

Many guitarists think of playing solos as just using scales over chords.

If you think like this, it means:

Your mind goes on autopilot and your hands are doing all the work.

This doesn't often lead to memorable guitar playing.

Instead consider what great guitarists do, namely:

  1. Imagine sounds they want to hear in their guitar playing.

  2. Translate the sounds they hear in their head into the notes on guitar.

  3. Use their hands to find the notes and play them.

  4. Use their hands to add phrasing and squeeze as much emotion as possible from the notes.

Using this process helps both your ears and mind determine the sound you play.

You should always be asking yourself this important question:

“What Do I Want To Hear Next?”

When you master this process, you are able to play guitar with feeling every time.

When you are first learning it, give your brain the time to go as slowly as it takes to go through the steps.

Think about this in the same way as you would while learning a new lick for the first time.

Bottom line:

Learning to play guitar with feeling is about playing with your mind and hands, not just reciting memorized patterns.

This approach is entirely different from the one used by inexperienced guitarists, whose guitar solos are merely an attempt to run into a cool sounding note or two by running through scales or licks they know.
