In my lessons I often alternate teaching them things they 'want' to learn with things they 'need' to learn.

I explain that what they need to learn 'is' what they want to learn because it directly relates to the student's own goals.

I teach my students whatever they 'want' to learn. They are paying for the lessons, therefore I should only teach them what they want to learn.

I make a deal with my students. I tell them that I will teach them what they 'want' to learn after they learn and practice what they 'need' to learn.

6. When is the best time to teach guitar students to apply what they have learned to real music?

Before the student has mastered the music that he/she is learning.

After the student has mastered the physical ability to play what has been learned.

After the student has mastered the theoretical and mental concepts behind what has been learned.
