Want To Play Guitar Like A Pro? Practice This Every Day
The best practice routines are custom-made just for you. In order to give you a custom-built practice routine designed specifically for you, I’d first have to learn more about you. Since we are not (yet) working together as teacher and student, I give you the next best thing: Category Based Guitar Practice Routines.
I’ll first show you what the 7 broad categories are and what’s inside each one. Then I’ll show you how to create a practice routine for every day of the week based on these categories and how much time you plan to practice each day.
7 Broad Categories Of Guitar Practice:
- Musical Mind (music theory, ear training, fretboard knowledge, etc.)
- Technique Mastery (developing perfect physical technique skills)
- Problem Solving (fixing bad habits, errors or problems present in your musicianship)
- Application (effortlessly using what you know in real music)
- Integration (tying everything you know together so that your playing is fluent as you connect one idea, lick, technique or phrase to another)
- Exploration (seeking out new things to learn or new ways to apply things you already know)
- Creativity (writing songs, improvising, recording, etc.)
So how much time should you practice each of these categories per day…?
That depends on how much time you plan to practice each day.
If you plan to only practice 30 minutes or less, pick any 2 categories. Tomorrow, you can pick 2 other categories, etc. Example:
If you plan to practice more than 30 minutes, but less than 60 minutes, pick any 3 categories. Tomorrow, choose another 3 categories. Example:
If you plan to practice more than 60 minutes, but less than 90 minutes, pick any 4 categories. Tomorrow, choose another 4 categories. Example:
If you plan to practice more than 90 minutes, but less than 120 minutes, pick any 5 categories. Tomorrow, choose another 5 categories. Example:
If you plan to practice more than 120 minutes, but less than 180 minutes, pick any 6 categories. Tomorrow, choose another 6 categories. Example:
If you plan to practice more than 180 minutes, do all 7 categories. Example:

“Online Guitar Lessons with Tom Hess are fantastic! He was able to teach me in 10 months what nobody was able to teach me in 10 years practically. Really precise and focused and what I asked him to teach me. I’ve seen other students basically changing their lives, and I wanted to be part of it! It’s fantastic!”
