Question: How do I write truly great sounding, original and emotionally expressive song melodies? I mean, is there any specific way (or even an algorithm) the professional musicians use write song melodies like this?

Tom Hess's Answer: To write emotional song melodies, work on practicing both songwriting and guitar phrasing. By identifying and practicing different songwriting methods, you will improve your ability to sit down and think of great musical ideas. By working on your guitar phrasing, you will develop the skills needed to quickly improvise creative ideas in the moment. Although guitar phrasing is specific to guitar, the general idea of creating better phrases will transfer into songwriting to make you a better overall songwriter as well. By working to improve on these two areas, you are using a very similar process that is used by all great musicians and songwriters (when it comes to writing better music).
