Question: Hi Tom Hess, you’re an amazing player and teacher... Do you think practicing alternate picking on acoustic guitar is good for improving my picking techniqueand pushing myself to be faster on guitar (both electric and acoustic)?

Tom Hess's Answer: Practice guitar how you want to play – If you want to be an electric guitar player, spend most of your time playing electric guitar. Some guitarists believe you must become good at acoustic guitar in order to play with great electric guitar technique, but this is a myth. The best way to improve your technique on electric guitar is to practice it on electric guitar. Additionally, do not limit yourself to alternate picking only. Learn how to use directional picking technique. This is BY FAR the best technique to learn for developing guitar speed.
