Why It’s Important To Build A Loyal Following Of Music Fans In Your Local Area

By Tom Hess

It seems like common sense that “…once you’ve finished your album, you should upload it online to gain a following of fans.” Reality: there is much more to the process of gaining tons of new music fans.

Getting fans online is important, but gaining a strong local following is MUCH more powerful for growing your music career. Building a strong local following means actively working to get your shows booked at local venues, performing, selling merch and motivating people to follow your career by word-of-mouth when they see your shows.

This is much more powerful than simply uploading your music to a website where a few hundred people listen to it or leave a comment (but never buy it or take further action).

Developing a local following makes you more marketable to others in the music business as well. When music companies see what you have built, they understand the extra work you did to gain your fans. This gives you MUCH better chances at getting a record deal or any other music career opportunity.
